Halkidiki Guide
Halkidiki is located on the mainland of Greece. It's airport is Thessaloniki. the 2nd largest city in Greece - the drive time with a car 1 hour from the airport.
Halkidiki is made up of 3 penninsulas - Kassandra, Sithonia and the Holy Mount Athos.
Kassandra is a tourist place with many different villages with a wide choice and variety of things to do such as weekly local markets to visit and lovely bays with sand/shingle beaches along with Themal baths and stunning views.
Sithonia is far less built up with amazing scenery and beautiful sandy beaches. Fantastic for snorkelling as it is mountainous. Small villages and local people inhabit this peninsula. This is also where the majority of honey for the whole of Greece is made due to the vast amount of pine forest.
Mt Athos is inhabited only by monks over 13 massive monasteries. No female is ever allowed to set foot on athos. So the view can be enjoyed from sithonia or on a local boat trip that sails around the coast of athos.
Mount Olympus home of the gods is also a 2 hour drive away. This is the birth place of Greek history and mythology and at the foothills has the ruins of dion and the tombs of king Phillip the 2nd (Alexander the greats father)
There are several waterfalls and rural villages and the cave of petralona, so many thing to discover!
